I added another airplane to the back-side of the clouds too so that my cake topper was reversible. I also added the number 3 cut out in paper (again, I used my Silhouette Portrait) and you could either add it using paper or write it with a cute metallic marker.
You will need one 9 x 19cm loaf vanilla buttercake; and one 20 x 30cm rectangular buttercake. You can either use your own recipe, or copy the one below. You'll need the exact same ingredient quantities for the rectangular cake that you do for the loaf cake, so just use the same recipe.

In November we made a Lightening McQueen cake for Bob the Builder's birthday, and at the time Top Gun repeated over and over how he wanted a Mater cake for his birthday. Well, two months ago he changed his tune after becoming obsessed with airplanes. "Mommy, Daddy, I want a crashed airplane cake. Mommy, you make the cake, and Daddy, you decorate it." A crashed airplane? Huh? We pictured an airplane upside down in a pile of dirt and smashed parts or tail end up in a body of water, and that's just a little too dark for a four-year-old's birthday cake.
So even though Michael had been planning that Mater cake for three months (sometimes planning ahead can backfire), we switched gears and started thinking airplanes, not that Michael really minded since he's an aerospace engineer and has an obsession with aircraft going back to his own childhood and seeing the Apollo 11 moon landing on television in 1969. Yes, the love of all things that fly is deeply rooted. Top Gun chose one of his airplanes to be the model, a Tonka Lil' Chuck airplane, which is based on a GeeBee Model Z. Michael took that model and designed the shape of the cake but made the vertical tail, or the rudder, larger so it would have room for the birthday boy's age.
Carving with a serrated knife gives the airplane its curves, so having a cake of the right consistency is important. A cake with a very soft crumb will not carve well, and I recommend avoiding box cakes for that reason. The yellow butter cake and chocolate cake we have used in the past work well for carving. They are quite moist and flavorful, but have a firmer crumb that doesn't collapse when trying to carve.
I use Wilton Decorator Preferred and Performance Pans for our cakes because they are widely available at craft stores, and that's particularly helpful since we don't have any restaurant supply stores nearby. Sometimes the pan instructions do not match the recipe instructions for such things as oven temperature and baking times, so I usually follow the pan instructions which seems to produce a more level and evenly baked cake. The pans require greasing and parchment paper to ensure a good release when removing the cakes.
Hi! I just had to let you know that I made an airplane cake last night from the templates you posted and it came out awesome! Your directions were great and the design is really cute. My husband flys radio control airplanes and I decorated the cake to look like a plane we got him for his birthday (yah, the cake is for him). It came out sooooo cute! I was able to make the vertical tail from a piece of Arnolds flat bread. I cut it to size and then toasted it. Same thing with the prop! I love that you used the Easter egg, such an innovative idea! We only have about 20 people coming for cake tonight so I cut the templates out to be a little smaller than you designed them and I was able to cut all the pieces out of two 9x13 cakes. (I did two Dunkin Heines batters but made my own butter cream). Well I just had to say thank you for your post. It was really helpful! My husband loves the cake, and that makes me happy!
today on 10.10.10 its 8 years ago that i met my husband for the first time on a airplane. So i want to make an airplane cake for him. but i have no idea how to tackle it. So i googled it and stumbled over ur website, and i just had 2 compliment you and your husband! it looks just perfect! you guys really did a good job and inspired me. This cake was very different from all my other cakes and that is simply because the birthday boy was lactose intolerant which meant no butter and milk and milk-related ingredients in the cake or the icing. All my cakes were made using butter and have milk in them (see my cake recipes here), so I was reluctant to accept the order at first. I also told the mom that I do not have a separate set of utensils and cake pans to cater to her order and she was ok with me using my existing ones.
We discussed further on the cake and agreed that I would bake the cake using margarine (hydrogenated palm oil) and that I will use water instead of milk in the cake recipe. Margarine produces cakes that are as soft and fluffy as butter does and I know this because my mom used to bake cakes using margarine when I was a kid.
First up, the big cake. It was all vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered with marshmallow fondant. The clouds were vanilla buttercream too, and I used a large Wilton round tip to pipe them right onto the fondant! I used cookie cutters for the airplanes... the large one from this Wilton set and also this little cutesy one.
This little airplane smash cake was a 6" vanilla cake filled and frosted with matching blue vanilla buttercream! The mother of the birthday boy provided me with the matching Airplane "1" candle... but you can get one here (looks like that might be more than one... try here too!).

I do have a question for you as far as pricing on cakes. How much do you charge for a 2 tiered cake, such as the "Airplane cake"? It looks like a 6" and 9" layers, correct me if I am wrong.I am making a 2 tiered cake covered in Fondant and making the Fondant from your recipe...hope it comes out as good looking as yours. Hi Connie! If my memory serves me, this cake had 6" and 10" tiers and would be $120. As for the fondant, I'd just make it way ahead so you can practice. It might be crumbly or dry after you get all the powdered sugar put in... JUST KEEP KNEADING! And if you have to, add a teaspoon of water at a time until it comes together. It's not easy at first, but with practice, you'll get it and it'll be very worth the effort!
